Road Design / Construction / Improvement / Maintenance

The total expenditure on roads in the County was €21,601,764 in 2002. An allocation of €10,535,698 was provided by the Department of Environment and Local Government whilst the National Road Authority allocated €11,066,066 towards National Roads.

The major schemes undertaken included:-

Local Improvement Schemes

This Scheme refers to non-public roads serving two or more separate agricultural holdings. A local contribution of at least 10% of the cost of improvement works required and the balance is charged to the Local improvement scheme grant from DOELG.

Public Lighting

Total number of lights 4,800

Cost of electricity/maintenance/upgrade €515,611

In 1996 a decision was taken to upgrade all public lighting in the county from Mercury to Sodium lights and a contract was entered into with the ESB in 1999 to upgrade same and provide infill lighting to be funded over a five year period. The works were completed in May 2000 and will be paid for in full by 31/12/2003.

 

Road Safety

Kilkenny County Council completed 7 Low Cost Remedial Schemes in 2002. The value of these schemes totalled €251,065 - 2 were funded by the NRA on National Roads and 5 were on Non National Roads. The works involved improving the road marking, traffic signs and lighting at high accident location sites.

Kilkenny County Council continues to emphasise the importance of safety on our roads by means of education, accident prevention and publicity.

Motor Taxation Statistics 2002

A total of 3449 new vehicles were registered in Co. Kilkenny in 2002 compared with 3654 in 2001 and 5375 in 2000.

The National Vehicle & Driver File system was implemented in Kilkenny Motor Tax as and from the 1st December, 2001. The National Car Test now requires that all cars over four years old qualify to be tested.
